Our History

Today, Crossroads Theatre is a professional theatre company that brings relevant and accessible professional theatre to Weston and Northwest Toronto. But for over thirty years, Shakespeare in Action (SiA) enhanced local arts education by bringing the language and stories of Shakespeare to audiences of all ages. SiA accomplished this by presenting Canadian interpretations and adaptations of Shakespeare's plays for young audiences, and growing arts education outreach programs in schools, libraries and community centres.

In 2019, SiA became the resident professional theatre company at the new Artscape Weston Common in Toronto's northwest. As one of the few professional theatre organizations residing in this part of the city, we began to call Weston our permanent home and broaden our mandate to provide productions and learning opportunities that engage and reflect our community. This meant looking beyond Shakespeare and the western canon.

By 2024, SiA’s programming had flourished far beyond the confines of Shakespeare. To better reflect our new direction of producing relevant and accessible theatre in Weston, we changed our name to Crossroads Theatre. We are now a professional theatre company that stages two full-scale plays per year, as well as providing community and education programs throughout the year to our local GTA community.
